Typically, the lariat is long rope with a running noose at one end used to catch horses and cattle, and for trick roping in rodeo competitions. Trick and fancy roping originated among the charro riders of Old Mexico, where it was known as floreo de reata, or "making flowers of rope." However, these lariats are necklaces. Often with a small, reinforced loop at one end (called a hondo) through which the chain or leather passes. They are worn loosely around the neck.
